Going Beyond Sustainability

At Akaroa Stargazing, we believe a great experience should not only be memorable but also meaningful. That's why we are proud to be a Qualmark Gold Sustainable Tourism Business, recognized for our genuine commitment to our community, our guests, and the environment.

We understand that a truly sustainable future means more than just leaving no trace. It means leaving a place better than we found it. While we are committed to sustainable practices, we are now on a journey to go a step further and embrace regenerative tourism to actively restore and enhance our little piece of the world.

Our Commitment to a Regenerative Future

We are taking the first steps on our regenerative journey by focusing on what we know best: protecting the night sky and inspiring our community.

  • We are leading the local bid to have Akaroa and a part of the Banks Peninsula designated as a Dark Sky Reserve. This ambitious project aims to protect the incredible night skies for future generations and make our region a world-class destination for astronomers and astrotourists.

  • Our commitment to preserving the darkness begins with education. On every one of our tours, our guides spend a short time discussing the impact of light pollution. We give guests quick, easy tips on how they can reduce light pollution and contribute to the health of the night sky, no matter where they are.

  • We believe in actively supporting the place we call home. We are proud to contribute a percentage of every booking from our evening stargazing tours to the Akaroa Heritage Park to help support their incredible conservation work.

  • Our passion goes beyond our tours. Through our school holiday activities and our Astronomy Club, we share the wonders of the universe with local families and children. It is our mission to inspire the next generation of stargazers and to show them why preserving the darkness is so important.
